Tri Construction was appointed by Kans and Kandy to carry out the comprehensive strip-out and refurbishment of a former Biffa waste disposal facility in South Shields. Works commenced in winter 2023, starting with the establishment of site facilities and the internal strip-out, including asbestos removal and a substantial demolition programme.

Following this, a complex temporary works design was developed and implemented, which included propping and significant modifications to the existing steel frame. The refurbishment continued with a full thermal envelope upgrade, incorporating new roof and wall cladding. Internal works featured a full office fit-out, upgrades to existing M&E services, the installation of new sectional doors, civil works, drainage improvements, and a complete internal slab overlay.

The refurbished facility now spans over 100,000 square feet and includes a fully modernised two-storey office block. The space comprises open-plan offices, kitchens, toilet facilities, and welfare areas for warehouse operatives.

Delivered within a 36-week programme, the completed facility now serves as a state-of-the-art distribution hub for DHL Logistics
